Starting 2006 with a Bang
Between the louder news, and the much, much quieter, my noggin is chock-full of nauseating noise.

Luckily, my bet is that the second one will crawl back into the dank hole from whence it came.

More Rib Stickiness
When I read about Trader Joe's Frozen Steel Cut Oatmeal in the Fearless Flyer (yucky old PDF, last page), I just had to try it out. Especially since I'm far too lazy to cook steel cut oats on my own.

Two perfect, adorable, easy-to-unwrap single servings. And it's true, just the perfect amount of sweetness (though I might enjoy the other with a small pat of butter). Lovely texture.

So easy and delicious, I may never go back to quick-cooking oatmeal again!

Still Sticking to My Ribs
Yesterday, lured by the promise of real Polish food, we ventured down 1 into the guts of the City (a rarity).

I had potato dumplings with mushroom sauce, and D. pierogies (what else?). Both passable; Daniel would touch neither. The garlic soup was positively therapeutic, though, and I recommend it highly if you're suffering the latest respiratory nasties.

The Circle at 14th Ave and St. Francis Blvd. was an interesting little sight. As was the somewhat imposing Arden Wood, which I only just now found out is a Christian Science healing facility.

Bring It (Or, "I Should Have Added 'Selfish,' Too")
I wasn't going to post these here, but, eh... what the heck. It's a slow week.

My Johari window. And the darker Nohari window. Feel free to do the latter anonymously, if you're half the chicken I am.

Sans Flaming Cheese
If one of the only things you missed about Detroit was this, you'd be happy enough that one of these was opening in town tomorrow, too.

Cell Follies
I think my cell number must be very similar to that of a local real estate agent, as I've been getting the weirdest messages. First, her secretary had some client on the line and they left a whole conversation about a meeting. This morning, a barely-understandable guy was all excited about some appraisal or other.

Maybe I should start answering my phone, have a bit of fun a la Crank Yankers. I guess that'd be one way of handling my housing market angst.

Nyquil... You Complete Me.
I know there are more annoying things than having a cold with a toddler that has a cold... but you'll have to forgive me if I can't think of them at the moment.

The bub is determined to do things repeatedly today, things that he knows are off-limits. Including, but hardly limited to, standing in the cat water.

More amusingly, he's been trying to learn the ABC song like mad, after he heard me do it along with his Laugh & Learn Home. Today, I spun around as he sang "Aaaayyyyy, behhh, seeeeh, bleeble glorp block doopy..." The impressiveness was magnified tenfold by the fact that he'd simultaneously learned to undress himself, and his pants were nowhere to be found.

While he's napping, I'm making emergency cold soup. Which includes:

  • One half of a sinus-reaming onion, coarsely chopped
  • One single-serve bag of baby carrots, chopped
  • One jar of Beech Nut toddler chicken, including "juice"
  • One cup of chicken broth
  • Six cups of water
  • Six teaspoons bouillon powder
  • Garlic powder, lots
  • Italian seasoning
  • One bay leaf
  • Half a package of Japanese soba noodles

  • From what I can smell, it might not turn out that bad.
