It's No Schulz, But...
Tim has been using Bitstrips to make blog comics for awhile. I thought I might try it out, too, and after an initial day of technical difficulties, this is what I ended up with.

D. says that his little fake dude isn't a good enough representation, but, in my defense, the component libraries are pretty limited!

Round and Round
Hey, look! A post! Because you deserve it. And also because D. keeps making fun of me.

Earlier we were bored. So I used up an entire stick of sidewalk chalk to make a labyrinth, posted on Kiddley a few months ago, in the driveway. Totally worth it! The neighbors are envious -- I could tell when I was (most inadvisably) up on the garage roof getting more photos (which, now mastered, opens up whole new UNIVERSES of Halloween decorating options).

Oot and Aboot
Goodness, it was nice to get out and play a little bit today -- to finally feel like doing it. We went up to Howarth Park, rode the train, let the bub blow off some steam in the bouncy hut, and checked out the impressive new playscape.

That intensity of crowd and chaos always makes me nervous, though. The bub is zippy, and I step into controlled ulcer mode the second he slips out of my line of sight. Maybe I need to dress him in blaze orange next time...

Rifftastic
The show was awesome! Packed house, everyone having a good time. I spent part of the time wondering if my mascara would hold out, I was laughing that much. We were only about ten rows back, so we could see the guys pretty well, which was cool.

Prior to the show, we were treated to themes from Star Trek and other fitting tunes on the house organ. I've been to classic theatres that I knew featured original organs, but never got to hear one, so I feel a little better about my status as an enthusiast now.

And we didn't even get lost, and found a legal parking spot within five minutes of reaching the theatre (thank you teeny tiny convertible in front of us), woooot! It was the first time I'd been to the Castro district, so that was fun, too. Last year, I see that they also had a show in San Rafael, which is only about twenty-five minutes south of us (as opposed to an hour), so I hope they do that again in the future.

Didn't bring the camera, but others did. The recorded Riff should be available soon, too. We thought about letting out an obnoxious bark or something, just so we could say "hey, did you hear those idiots there? -- dude, that was totally us!"

Almost as Geeky as a Comic Con
In a couple of weeks, we're going to SF Sketchfest. Specifically, RiffTrax Live at the Castro. Or, MST3K for modern times, if you haven't been paying attention to me blather on intermittently about it for the past two years. Which, let's face it, you probably haven't, otherwise you'd have come to me and been all like "ZOMFG, Jennie!!! Thank you for introducing me to this superfine, revolutionary, beverage-spewing mode of entertainment! How can I ever repay you???"

Luckily D. is the Fan with a capital F, because I hadn't a clue that Sketchfest even existed. The entire event sounds more fun to me than a film festival (and that's saying something). Maybe next year we should just get passes and camp out.

More Sweets
  • Decorate this sweet (virtual) gingerbread house, courtesy Jenny B. Harris. Kids will love it, too!
  • Okay. All-natural premade chocolate chip cookie dough? That's rated highest and the best buy by Consumer Reports? Evidently I haven't been spending enough time at Trader Joe's.
  • I didn't know until recently that Wilton makes pretzel molds (thanks to a rare wander down the cake aisle at Michael's). What a fun treat for parties (or stocking stuffers).

    A Little Self Promotion
If you're an Office fan, you might be familiar with the Dunder Mifflin Infinity game, with which I've been playing along. Well, the results from our first task are in, and I won our branch logo contest! I was a little geeked, since the tools they gave us were infinitely frustrating, and there were nearly 200 entries. Mine may be among the least creative (I really admire the shapes that some were able to acheive given such fickle tools!), but it is corporate-y, which was my goal.

And then there's nepotism. Goooo nepotism!

So now, the logo chosen by each branch goes to a public vote. Not only would I win real honest-to-goodness swag from the cast (squee!), points (or, SchruteBucks, in the game vernacular) would be earned for every one of the over 700 members in our branch.

If you could drop in and vote, that would be fantastic! Just go to:

    http://www.dundermifflininfinity.com/tasks/globalvote?week=1

Our Waterloo logo is on the last page (page four). Just click on the image, and then hit vote. Easy peasy!

And I think you can still join the game, too. Sign up for the Waterloo, IA branch, and our Regional Manager will approve you ASAP. We have such a fun little community already, so I hope you do!

    Pump it Up
If you don't have a kid under five, borrow one, stat, and then find out when your local Pump it Up inflatable party center has open play times. It's been at least a dozen years since I've been inside an inflatable, and... hoo. Boy. Worth every penny of the more-than-reasonable $7 paid for the both of us to play for an hour and a half this morning. Much, much better than going to the gym for a workout! There were five giant inflatables (and, psssst, D., I almost forgot -- an air hockey table). One was a giant circular arena with a "platform" in the middle, presumably made for whack-dueling each other with those giant padded sticks. We just jumped around and around. And around. Phew!

If you know me well, you're probably aware that I'm terrified of heights, the terror exacerbated by a nasty case of vertigo. Only the bub could get me to go up and down that giant bouncy slide that reached the ceiling (shudder). I'd probably do it again, though, even if only to see the looks on the faces of those grumpy sitabout moms.

    Marsh Walk
As it turns out, misty mornings are the best to spend in the riverside wetlands preserve, because it keeps everyone but the die-hards away! So we had the two-mile trail mostly to ourselves, very nice. We saw a jackrabbit, and innumerable water fowl (many species with which I'm not at all familiar, must really get that field guide).

I took a few cell photos, but next week I need to bring a real camera.

    Oodles of Oddity
As mentioned in this early a.m. post, I've got, um, quite the interesting collection of photo clip art. I'd almost have paid to sit in on some of the live-action photo shoots, they must have been hilarious, not to mention quite possibly drunken. Instead of studying for my Acrobat quiz (oops) during the bub's nap this afternoon, I sat here, marvelling at thousands of pieces of slightly demented photographic ephemera.

So this week I'll post one freaky-diki selection each day. Because I love you ever so!

Maybe I should get this disgusting nightmare out of the way first. Caveat: don't be eating anything when you open it! It's pretty gross.

    Zoo
We went to the San Francisco Zoo today. Really couldn't have asked for better zoo-tromping weather -- cloudy and about 60°F. Hoorah!

The bub is getting a little more interested in the animals, though only the more exuberant ones. And of course the petting zoo (though we'll just forget that little dive Mommy had to take to keep him from picking up those fun little balls of "brown Kix.").

My favorite moment wasn't part of an exhibit, even -- it was a mating pair of hummingbirds. They were close enough to touch, in a tree just above our heads. The male flashed his ruby throat, and sang, and danced, and it was really such a rare treat to even see the wee things not zipping away. I came home and made sugar water for the pretty new glass feeder that, strangely enough, we just bought yesterday.

Here are a few photos. And here's a wallpaper of the meerkat, for those of you who enjoy charming, stylish rodents as I do.

    If You Build It...
Some folks in our neighborhood are taking this Halloween stuff pretty seriously - they turned part of their garage into a three-dimensional "haunted house." It looks a little more impressive than my photos represent.

So far we've got our orange and purple lights hung, and a big spider's web. I was going to create a giant reuse spider, but I didn't collect enough paper towel rolls in time. I may still make it after the fact, and post it for next year, though. I did just staple gun a cat made of a Lean Cuisine tray to the siding, though - I suppose I'll take pictures at dusk.

For Halloween night, I'm giving little snack-sized zip bags with ghost stickers, Nerds, and Dum-Dums/Mini Tootsie Roll Pops. Even moms and dads get treat samples - pumpkin or apple mini muffins, and a wee cup of cappuccino (assuming I can find small cups for hot liquids).

    Life Goes On
Since it was finally cool enough even in the full sun, yesterday we drove down to the Marin Headlands for a trio of letterboxes. Struck out on the first two, and couldn't make it to the last (or the black sand beach, wah). I want to get back into hiking, but I just won't be able to do it without a frame pack for Daniel; he's just too heavy to hang on my front in the wrap. Not to mention that he feels too confined and wriggles out of the shoulder bands, so I end up half-carrying him.

We were lucky enough to see a partridge hen and her line of four tiny chicks - oh, the adorableness! It seemed late in the season for such small babies, but maybe it doesn't matter so much around the bay (?). There were also horses on the trail, which entertained Daniel. D. got a bunch of photos with his cell; I'll post a link when they're uploaded.

On the way back, we stopped in Corte Madera at the open air Village. We grabbed some super naughty "Italian" mallfood that starts with Sb, and then picked up Daniel a nifty new toy to bang on. The timing for our visit was great, as the ribbon cutting for the "Muzzy Marsh" tot playland was held just a couple hours before we arrived (which I only found out just now on the website). Daniel was thrilled - but unfortunately equally by the findings on the ground (Cheerios, sticks, etc.) as by the duck, frog, and turtle climbing sculptures.

ETA - The Photos: Daniel had a fun ride on Mommy, looked cute, saw some horses, drove a boat, crawled through a log, and picked up girls.

I'm searching for handmade infant/toddler peasant costumes. Because I'm too lazy to make one myself. I'd even settle for a decent Halloween-store type outfit, if I could find one that wasn't shiny and stupid. Oddly, even eBay has been no help to me.

    Afternoon in Old Town
Yesterday we went to check out the Farmer's Market in the historic district. Not too much in the way of produce. I only bought a basket of strawberries for shortcake - and it turns out many were bad. Maybe we'll just stick to the quaint roadside Palace of Fruit in Penngrove from now on.

While over that way, we decided to grab a few letterboxes. Turns out that one great spot took up all of our two-hour parking. There was a rather unkempt labyrinth, which I thought was maybe built in Victorian times, but after some Googling, I found its birthdate to be a rather disappointing 1999.

    D. took a few pics while Daniel and I hung out.

On our way back to the car, we passed the beautiful and long-vacant Philip Sweed elementary school. The grafitti, busted-out windows, and rotting ceilings made me sad. However, a little more Googling had me smiling again.

I love how letterboxing gets us walking in neighborhoods we might not otherwise, finding hidden treasures. At curbside in front of many of the grandest of the old gingerbreads, we saw patterned concrete blocks rising from the sidewalk. It took me a few minutes to realize we were seeing our first carriage steps.

I Do Loves Me Some Alliteration
    Okay, I'll play along:

Pick five of the following and then
    complete the sentences. Then pass
this little meme on to three more
of your blog friends… no tag backs!

    If I could be a scientist…
    If I could be a farmer…
    If I could be a musician…
    If I could be a doctor…
    If I could be a painter…
    If I could be a gardener…
    If I could be a missionary…
    If I could be a chef…
If I could be an architect…
    If I could be a linguist…
    If I could be a psychologist…
    If I could be a librarian…
If I could be an athlete…
    If I could be a lawyer…
If I could be an inn-keeper…
    If I could be a professor…
    If I could be a writer…
    If I could be a llama-rider…
    If I could be a bonnie pirate…
If I could be an astronaut…
If I could be a world famous
    blogger…
If I could be a justice on any
    one court in the world…
If I could be married to any
    current famous political figure…
If I could be a justice on any
one court in the world, I
    would...

If I could be a librarian, I'd work here.

If I could be an inn-keeper, it would be on a small ranch, with goats, and ponies, and a koi pond. There would be fresh muffins for breakfast (a different flavor every day of the week), and mimosas. No one would have to share a bathroom, and I would put the prettiest stationery and postcards in the desks. For bathing, you could choose a bar of your favorite handmade soap from a big basket in the hall.

If I could be a world-famous blogger, I'd still answer all of my fan mail. Even the nasty letters, because it would give me the chance to be evil, and being evil to mean people is good fun. I would put text ads on my sidebar to support my Frappuccino habit. Most importantly, my Google Rank would beat Jennie Garth.

If I could be a doctor... I'd probably die of a bleeding ulcer.

If I could be a musician, I'd play for movie soundtracks. I would meet John Williams and become his protege. He would even let me help write the score for Harry Potter VII.

I shall also alliterate my tag-ees: Suze, Sarah, and Stephanie. Of course you're in no way obligated to participate :-)

Feeling better, we went up to Healdsburg today to hunt down the Quartet (though at the moment really a Triplet, since #3 is missing). Led us on a nice walking tour of the town, where we drooled over the little cottages and bungalows. Very cool place.

Very much need to update our personal stamp. Aside from acheiving just a little more skill since carving it, obviously our location has changed (don't know if it's worth adding it anymore, we may just be moving again...). Think I'd like to change theme entirely, too - just can't seem to come up with anything simple and meaningful.

    Gname That Gnome
Daniel and I were walking around Kmapart this morning, as we are wont to do once weekly, for lack of a Target. We'd just left bathroom organization and were well on our way to shaving supplies (no, not for me, of course I haven't shaved my legs in weeks, silly), when, OhEmGee, you'll never guess what we saw on the endcap, never! Whole shelves of gnomes! Gnomes with books, reclining gnomes, and, sort of frighteningly, gnomes riding frogs. You may remember my period of gnome coveting. Luckily you can't put a price on charm, baby, 'cause these little guys were only seven bucks. I got one with a book for myself (of course), but in honor of our escapades, I may pick up another to brighten/tack up my sister's patio, too. Or car. Whatever works.

So here's your challenge: my gnome is nomeless. Email your best suggestions (limit three, please). If I pick yours, you get one pound of Kat's Gourmet Flavored Coffee*, your choice of grind, flavor, and caffeine. Please consider his obvious intelligence and that hint of mischevious twinkle in his eye. Creativity counts, and I do enjoy a little obscurity - but not too much! Due by the end of February.

*Whore Alert! Whore Alert! I'm a consultant, so if you happen to see something you'd like to purchase, my number is #0924. You do want Daniel to go to college, don't you?

I love the California State Railroad Museum. It's one of the two museums I can take seriously in the area. Saturday it gets even better, when a new rotating exhibit of toy trains opens to the public. San Diego banker Thomas W. Sefton spent over forty years building what is thought to be one of the finest collections in the world. His health failing at 86, he and his family decided to share it with California. 7,000 pieces - I can't wait to get a look.

Sorry to disappoint, but I've no April Fools' Prank this year! I was looking forward to it, too, but with vacation and all, and my brain being mush (you should hear me try to string a sentence - I was never super-skilled, but it's getting funnier all the time), nothing came. Kitschy Koo
Ever since we saw "The Full Monty," I've had an abnormal desire for a garden gnome (oh, and the kidnapping/roadtripping my sister and I performed on my mom's gnome a couple years back didn't help, either). Normal being my general distaste for all things statuary and borderline creepy outside my door. But now we have a yard, and it just looks like it needs some, oh, personality. The space isn't trashy enough for flamingos, classy enough for cherubs, rural enough for deer, or elderly enough for gazing balls. And let's not even go there. But an unassuming little gnome, now, that's the ticket. And a tiny door for our tree, hee!

Added fun: they're all controversial. And stuff.

    Out and In
Did I mention that fall is finally here? Oh, I did.

Yesterday we drove north to the little town of Sutter, just outside Yuba City, where we scored two new letterboxes. One shadowed by the Sutter Buttes (billed as the "smallest mountain chain in the world," they actually gather their own tiny puffs of cloud), and the other in the Sutter Cemetery. After pondering the macabre displays among the infant graves, had some Italian at The Mall - yes, that's really its name - in Yuba City before heading back to town. Didn't take long to get bored, so we decided to catch Scary Movie downtown. The juvenile silliness was just the right thing. With temps dipping freakishly into the 30's last night, I got to wear my skinny scarf! A pleasant stroll around Old Sac, then off to bed.

Today was strictly for watching old movies and reading by the fire, and making Italian herb bread in the machine.

    Rah Rah
At least there's Spirit Week. Today I'm a pirate wench, and I've got a big parrot on my head.

It's not too often you can make these kids jealous with six bucks.

7 of 8, not too shabby for just one semester of Art History. Via That Rabbit Girl.

This is Not Helping My Puppy Lust

We'll Be Hangin' With the Other Cool Kids in the Balcony
We may have to wait forever for Portland, but at least we have Lewis Black and Dave Attel - live, right here in Sac, soon, at the best venue in town. And a cheapish $35 a pop, too.

Next Time, I'll Make it a Volcano
I'm not a big game player. The last one I played through was the gorgeous Pandora's Box - and that was over two years ago. I have abnormal tastes, I suppose, preferring intricate puzzle games to adventure and violence.

But yesterday I picked up Sim City 4 at the Book Fair, and spent a good two hours fiddling with it last night. How you play God Mode is probably a good indicator of mood. I did everything I could to spare the budget of the Fire Department, but they went on strike, anyhow.

So I dropped a meteor on 'em. Maybe I should look into GTA after all.

    Rather be Sunday
My surprise was dinner theatre! Actually more like brunch theatre. The performances were pretty impressive, and the food (which broke my Points bank, even though I chose well, but it won't kill me) was good.

It had been far too long since I'd been to the theatre. At NMU, the campus shows were always a big event; what else are you going to do in the dead of winter with twelve feet of snow on the ground? Between the big productions, there were always the free student lab plays for a quick weeknight fix. At Oakland, a few of my co-workers and I had season tickets.

Afterwards we drove up to the old 'hood for some BevMo and Barnes & Noble action. Our current area, while pretty, is lacking in these and much more basic amenities, such as Target (gasp!), and Beverly's. I got a book that had been sitting at the bottom of my wishlist for some time.

Triclops - my latest little game addiction. Just beware the super-annoying ad if you hit play.

"I'm sorry you saw that, Fry. I usually try to keep my sadness pent up inside where it can fester quietly as a mental illness."
We watched Donnie Darko yesterday. I was only a borderline Jake Gyllenhaal fan, if even, but that viewing moved him up some serious notches. Check Holmes Osborne as the dad, too. Wonderful.

But if Gary Jules' soundtrack cover of Mad World keeps looping in my head, I'm going to need lithium.

Maybe I can evict it by thinking about my Halloween costume plans. The purple wig is easy. It's the eye and moon boots that are proving a challenge. I wonder if I can find a Nibbler?

    Swamp Attacks!
So we tried to check out Mars last night. Not wanting to drive all the way out to El Dorado Hills, I thought of a nice flat, open, relatively dark piece of farmland up the road from the school ideal for viewing.
So we parked on a gravelly turnout next to the field. The sky was clear and starry, and Mars hadn't disappeared behind that telephone pole.

What I had failed to think about, however, is the nature of the crop in that field. Rice. Which grows, of course, in standing water. Acres and acres of warm, standing water. And, not thinking, I was wearing shorts and sandals.

So the optics on the telescope were screwy, uselessly making Mars a blurry blob, and my ankles and kneepits are covered in mosquito welts. Thank goodness for the Internet and Cortizone cream.
