"Magazine Death Watch"
Well, I figured the periodicals world was hurting -- I can't even remember how many freebie subs I've picked up in the past few months -- but I had no idea the extent. I refuse to agree that Entertainment Weekly (oh, you little bright spot in my mailbox, you!) could conceivably go down, though.

DONE.
And not a day too soon.

My vote was blue, even if my whole heart wasn't. So you won't hear any raptures or gloating from me. Red(s), don't try to bait me with smacktalk (a-HEM). The candidate for whom I voted won, where my imaginary candidate could not. I'm resigned.

And that's pretty much all I have to say about that.

But you know what I can raise my glass to? It being OVER. Until, as Penn twitquipped, "One more day before Hillary starts running again."

"Politics and paczki"
You'd be hard-pressed to find paczki here in Sonoma, but it's always a really big deal in Detroit. I had a fat, juicy burger, but it's just not the same.

I'm a permanent absentee voter, so no waiting at the polls for me today. I was a complete ass and failed to request a Democratic ballot (apparently California was only semi-closed, which I would have known if I had LEARNED to READ), so it was just a bunch of dumb props for me. And, at the moment, things don't seem to be going as hoped.

With Theocracy and Oppression for All
Yes. It's really, truly true, and proof is way too easy to find: Huckabee is a nut. A nut with a scrumptious candy coating, but at heart, still a big, nucking, megafundie fut.

With such blatant declarations floating around, it baffles me that he's even in the running.

Bye, Big Martha
It's been a long, long time since I've watched Martha (though that may turn around if the Writer's Guild strike drags on). But I was sad to learn today that her mother, Martha Kostyra, 93, died last Friday. Martha Stewart posted a video tribute on her blog.

Return of the Native
Just catching up on my Michigan news this morning:
MARQUETTE — U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials announced Monday that gray wolves will be removed from federal threatened and endangered species lists in the western Great Lakes states, including Michigan.

Thanks to years and years of study and dedication by countless people, a crucial part of the Great Lakes ecosystem has finally come close to being restored.

An amazing feat of human cooperation. It gives me hope.

Preservation (of Buildings, Sanity, and Love Handles)
This is old news, but it's new to me. I'm so excited to see that 114-year-old building getting a well-deserved overhaul.

In other news, my final project is done. Tomorrow I take the exam, and I'm finished. Phew.

In other other news, the bub helped me make banana cookies today. Mmmmm. Just the right balance of crispy and soft. I think I'll have another, with a glass of milk.

You Want Me to What, Young Man?
Okay. I didn't even have to undergo drug testing for a paid position in a public school. Fingerprinting and background checks, perhaps, but that actually, you know, makes sense.

As much as I hope, someday, to volunteer in my community as I can -- I would immediately walk out on a demand for my urine (or mouth swab, thank you very much). Way to endear your most fervent supporters and waste perfectly good tax dollars to boot, people.

Election
Thank goodness for the availability of Permanent Absentee status to any citizen in this state. Have I said that before? I feel as if I've said that before. Well, I appreciate it, muchly, so it bears repeating.

Of course I miss out on the shmancy "I Voted" sticker.

I'll sleep a little more soundly knowing that the SD abortion ban has been defeated. And CA Prop 73 is failing. I'm lukewarm re: the Governator staying in, even if the mere idea of him being in office still rankles/offends. Badnarik tanked badly in the Texas District 10 race, but the only surprise there is how badly.

And, yes, I am relieved that the House has been taken, this time.

Yay! I Mean, Yikes!
My very first anywhere-near-large quake (that big red box!) in six years in California... and I was the only one that didn't feel it. No, while our second floor was shaking here (nothing misplaced), I was out at Trader Joe's, buying clementines and green tea. The girls at the service counter said they saw the door rattling, though.

Thoughts for Ebert
Roger Ebert had emergency surgery on Sunday, for complications caused by a previous operation for more cancer.

His wife, Chaz, reported yesterday that his condition is stable and improving.

I love to watch him verbally joust Richard Roeper over my second-favorite pastime every weekend, and I'll certainly be thinking about him as I watch the next pre-recorded show.

Put Away Your Politics
This is all I'll say about it, as there are folks far better suited to the discussion than myself. For a few days, I've been poking at a draft of something with a very similar bent, but far inferior to this.

I will add, however, that I personally find placing blame on the victims offensive and disrespectful at best. This is just one of many examples why.

Wish Dish
Ooo-oo-ooo! Have you seen! Now you can create several different Amazon Wish Lists under one account - all viewable to the public or not, your choice. And each item in your list has a link beneath it, so that you might easily move it between lists. Woo! My inner librarian is getting all hot.

Considering the possibilities... I can keep a Christmas list, a list just for Daniel, potential gifts for other people (private, that one, of course!), a library list, a music list...

Now if you'll excuse me - I have some serious categorization to do while the bub still sleeps.

But... It's Not Even April First!
"California Rep. Doug Ose introduced legislation Thursday to carve the image of former President Reagan onto Mount Rushmore, where it would join the granite busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt at the South Dakota national memorial.

"Ose said he thinks Reagan would fit nicely on the north side of the mountain, just to the right of Lincoln."
I for one would love to share some of what he and his 16 co-sponsors surely must be smoking. Your California lawmakers at work.

Rock, Hard Place - Meet Acid Rain
While Democrats fret over the possibility of Ralph Nader causing them to lose another election by stealing votes on the left, President Bush may face an even greater third-party threat from the right wing. The Libertarian Party nominee could cost Mr. Bush his job in 2004.

Maybe this election will turn out to be a bit more interesting than I'd thought.

I found this bit particularly amusing:
But so far, indications are that the Bush-Cheney campaign is not keeping it in mind. A senior adviser to the campaign, who did no[t] want his name used so he could speak more frankly, said there was no concern in the campaign.

None, none, the adviser emphasized. [Mr. Bush is] as strong as Ronald Reagan was in 1984.
Hrm. Obviously, no delusions there. But I think Nolan has it pegged:
Their biggest chunk of vulnerable voters are the fiscal conservatives and I know they are looking for a place to bail, Nolan said of the Bush campaign.

What used to happen is we had to deal with a wasted vote for Republicans. Theyd say, 'Well I agree with you and I actually like you better than Bob Dole or George Bush, but if I vote for you thats a vote less for Bush and the Democrats are going to get in and they are going to spend like drunken sailors,' said Nolan, considered the favorite to win the [Libertarian] nomination. But now Republicans are spending like drunken sailors.
In the end we'll still be stuck with a yahoo or an ass, but at least the race'll be fun.

"one God under a nation"
"The need of so many American believers to have government endorse their belief is thoroughly abject. How strong, and how wise, is a faith that needs to see God's name wherever it looks? (His name on nickels and dimes is rather damaging to His sublimity.)"

Upset and Sick in the AM = Out of the Closet
You can call me a crackpot, a vote-waster, a dreamer, irresponsible/childish, or just an idiot. But:

Haven't heard of him? Not surprising, what with all the attention the screaming, chest-beating, obscenity-flinging bipartisans get.

My most compelling reasons:

  • Public schools aren't working. I've spent the last three years watching the decay, with an occasional lame pep talk or head pat from the Agencies That Be. We shouldn't be throwing money after money into a bottomless pit. It's not helping.

  • It's my body, not yours. And that is simply that.

  • Criminalization of drugs wastes obscene gobs of money and lives. Stop it. And, given compelling scientific evidence, the protection of the legal use of medical marijuana should be of the utmost importance. If you've never watched someone riddled with inoperable cancer die in excruciating pain, don't talk to me about revoking their right to use it. It's cruel.

  • Civil liberties, unadulterated.

  • Fundamentalist? Antifundamentalist? A non-issue, as it should be.

  • Trade freely, but hands off. For the most part, defense means defense.

  • Nutshell: fiscal conservative, individual liberal. I'm down with that.

  • Say Hell did manage to freeze over, and Tweedle-Dee and Dum (who are looking more and more homogeneous all the time) were miraculously upset. Would much change? I'd think not. But I'm tired of settling for the lesser evil, people I can't respect or believe in with my head or gut, even marginally. It's the increasing self-loathing and guilt that are unbearable - I've only been convictionless because those who share my convictions are so unpopular? Despicable.

    McBaby
Looks like we're feeding our infants crap, too:

"French fries are the most popular vegetable eaten by children 19 to 24 months old," researcher Dr. Kathleen Reidy said at an American Dietetic Association conference. "Twenty to 25 percent of these kids did not eat a single healthy vegetable on the day of the survey, and 25 to 30 percent did not eat a single fruit... She said her research showed soft drinks were being placed into the bottles of infants as young as seven months old."

I'm seriously shocked by this, though I probably shouldn't be. The kids at school are knocking down bags of Cheetos with a side of Drumstik for lunch, but... babies and toddlers? Egads.

Yes, That's All I Do Now is Link to the Local Rag
The famous Fair Oaks fowl are more contentious than I thought. While I love watching the birds on picnics, I admittedly agree the herd could probably use a bit of thinning. I'm sure I'd quickly tire of my yard and porch being involuntarily whitewashed.

But this... This is just... "It's hard to go to the park for lunch, because they chase you. They come at you in groups when you get out of your car. We got a rubber-band gun, just for them. You can't let them sense your fear."

    Your Money's Good Here
    Dear Shingle Springs Miwok,

I understand that your generous donation has been turned away by a local school district. While they certainly have the right to refuse monies as they see fit, it seems wasteful and imprudent in these times of fiscal need. Especially when funding is being taken from those of questionable integrity with the other hand.

I am part of another underfunded school in the area. Rest assured that any donations made here would be accepted in the spirit with which they are given, considering the needs of students above all else.

    Thank you.

Inching up on the end of September, and my outfit for the day will include something sleeveless of necessity. I've nearly given up the thought that we'll ever see temps under 95 again. I don't want much, really. Mid 80's would be enough. We've even had to put off our trip to Apple Hill for two weeks now, because it's still too hot up there to be fun. Stayed inside and read.

I can easily list the books that make me cry, because they're so few:
  • Where the Red Fern Grows
  • The Amber Spyglass
  • Little Women
  • Bridge to Terabithia
  • Jude the Obscure

  • Well, add Pictures of Hollis Woods, drenched in palpable loss and longing. A timeless orphan story that just doesn't need to try as hard as Gilly Hopkins.

Speaking of bawling, I really shouldn't watch shows like Animal Cops, especially when I've just been reading soppy books. Just shouldn't.

And, on the heels of a similar but not as gross story we saw on Animal Precinct yesterday, D. sent me this story about 130 cats in my dear hometown.
