Thank You, PBS
I can't believe I've spent the last thirteen years in nearly complete ignorance of the 1995 A&E/BBC Pride and Prejudice. Simply because I've never been much of a Colin Firth fan. Erm... wasn't, that is. Ahem.

And now I can't wait until next Wednesday (I've been recording the Jane Austen series very, very early Wednesday mornings, because there are scheduling conflicts on Sunday nights) to see the second half. Siiiiiigh!

I have to Netflix Mansfield Park, because it didn't get recorded, grumble. No good reason. Maybe the DVR prefers a dippier Billie Piper in Dr. Who, and decided it had had enough of the pre-21st century version after I watched Ruby in the Smoke twice last year. Speaking of which, I wonder when The Shadow in the North will be showing here?

ETA: Sheesh! with all the edits. I swear I had digit-al diarrhea when I wrote this yesterday...

Bauble Babble
I've been watching parts of certain episodes of Beads Baubles & Jewels on PBS. In the past, I've had a hard time sitting through shows dedicated to one art or craft, but it's so much different now that I can record via DVR. Shwoop! just skip right through the less useful segments.

Anyhow. This is the kind of topic that makes television really invaluable. I mean, it's nice to have a book on hand with clear diagrams, or a class. But if there's a technique you don't quite understand, there's not much better than a big-screen closeup that can be saved and replayed until you do.

It Is Dry All Up in Here. Yo.
Three days. Three whole accident-free days. That includes a long nap yesterday.

We've literally been working to this point for months. I doubt I could be much giddier about a developmental milestone. If I kept ice cream in the house, there would be much eating of it. And cake. I suppose rum will have to do. Rum and The Office (sniff. sniff.) .

A Good Man
Charlie Rose interviews Charles Schulz in 1997, three years before his death. Via TV Squad.

I feel fortunate that we live very near and can visit often the places where he lived and worked and created. Even though there've been some concerns expressed by his family that the upcoming bio (10/16) and American Masters documentary (10/29) portray him as far more dour and depressed than he was, I'm still excited for both, albeit taking them with a healthy grain of salt.

I don't care much to read about The Simpsons (gasp!), but there's a bunch about the upcoming new Futurama DVD movies at the end of this recent interview with Matt Groening.

Guy Love
Okay, I admit. I wasn't totally on-board with the idea of a Scrubs musical episode. And there were parts that did disappoint.

But Guy Love made up for all of those. And then some. Yes, it did.

Tubeage
Well, I can't say that this third was the best season of The 4400, but it did keep me entertained over the summer (and two more eps to go -- to bring us into fall premieres). It sounds as if the ratings were very much good enough to merit a fourth season next year.

Premieres (for my reference)! Old stuff returning:

American Dad: Sun Sept 10 8:30
Family Guy: Sun Sept 10 9
The Office: Thu Sept 21 8:30
Desperate Housewives: Sun Sept 24 9
Lost: Wed Oct 4 9 (sigh!)
Scrubs: mid-season (double sigh!)

New shows to give a chance:
Jericho (CBS, who'dve thunk?): Wed Sept 20 8
Six Degrees: Thu Sept 21 10

Ugly Betty (Thu Sept 28 8) looks as if it might be silly, but I could use a dose of that until Scrubs returns, I suppose. Plus it appeals to my inner (ahem!) nerd girl.

...but The 4400 will be back for a third summer season, at least. If you haven't been watching, it's diverting enough that you might even want to Netflix the season 1 and 2 DVDs.

Now With 50% More High-Fructose Corn Syrup!
Yesterday evening I recorded the premiere of the new Martha (it re-airs daily at 6 pm PDT on TLC), and watched this morning. The jury is still out. It has a lighter, more ha-ha flavor that I'm not sure I can swallow. I mean, it's good that she (or her writing staff) has a sense of humor about the whole incarceration, but showing the crew ankle-braceleted just felt weird on her. The opening credits... bizarre. And the segments with Marcia Cross were a bit too twee. I don't know. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Or maybe I'm just not in the mood for that brand of levity these days.

You can get a special fall sneak preview if you punch in the lottery numbers on the seating chart (4,8,15,16,23,42).

I suppose that Alias site is still around, too... No, not really. But there are mirrors.

[Cue Twilight Zone Music]
Last night's Alias featured guest star Ricky Gervais, of whom we knew absolutely nothing. After the show nothing good's on, so D. played our first-ever ep of The Office. I slept through most of it (the current norm), but what I did see was pretty entertaining.

"Is that the guy from Alias?"

"I was just thinking that."

I had to turn to the media for confirmation. Sure enough, and bizarre.

The Smell of Censorship in the Morning
Well, the local ABC affiliate pulled Living permanently from the lineup as of this Tuesday. I was momentarily confused that Jack Hanna was on instead. Which was quickly replaced with pissed.

I'm no fan of Howard Stern (ick), but I'm still angry about that, too.

At Least the Giant Anteater is Original
I got sucked into Kingdom Hospital, even though the commercials made it obvious that it would be tacky and lame (turns out it rams straight past those to cringeworthy). And I've seen almost every Steven King movie, but the only two I respect are "Shawshank Redemption" and "Green Mile." Maybe "The Shining." So I should know better. Chalk it up to Wednesday boredom fortified by a lingering fascination with Andrew McCarthy. I'll probably watch it again tonight; the fact that it's only an hour this time helps.

Flashbacks With a Twist
Discovering VH1's I Love the 80's series has done nothing whatsoever for my reading or productivity in general. I could, and have, watched for hours at a time. Michael Ian Black is a riot. Tear-inducing.

But, best of all, there's Hal.

Oh, how I've missed Hal. I guess I could just pony up, already.

"But you're not eating the rabbits, sir, right?"
Inching up on the end of September, and my outfit for the day will include something sleeveless of necessity. I've nearly given up the thought that we'll ever see temps under 95 again. I don't want much, really. Mid 80's would be enough. We've even had to put off our trip to Apple Hill for two weeks now, because it's still too hot up there to be fun. Stayed inside and read.

I can easily list the books that make me cry, because they're so few:
  • Where the Red Fern Grows
  • The Amber Spyglass
  • Little Women
  • Bridge to Terabithia
  • Jude the Obscure

  • Well, add Pictures of Hollis Woods, drenched in palpable loss and longing. A timeless orphan story that just doesn't need to try as hard as Gilly Hopkins.

Speaking of bawling, I really shouldn't watch shows like Animal Cops, especially when I've just been reading soppy books. Just shouldn't.

And, on the heels of a similar but not as gross story we saw on Animal Precinct yesterday, D. sent me this story about 130 cats in my dear hometown.

    Fall Haul
Well, I always thought I watched too much TV. Thank goodness the networks (especially Fox. You suck - !!!) are keeping my best interests at heart, cancelling brilliant programming, and creating new shows in which I've not one iota of interest. So I'll be sticking to the remaining old standards, and not necessarily faithfully, excepting Alias:

  • Alias (Malcolm during reruns)
  • American Experience
  • Enterprise (70's Show during reruns)
  • Friends/Scrubs (possibly Tru Calling during reruns)
  • Trading Spaces
