rail worship
We finally made it to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento last month. I love trains...

thanksgiving 2001
We dined at the somewhat highbrow Birch Creek for Thanksgiving Dinner. It was nice. Not, perhaps, $40 a plate nice. But at least we kept our third-year-running shark tradition...

michigan part VI: travels with fabio
My mom has a garden gnome. With a look that was so disturbingly "come hither," we just couldn't pass it up without having some fun. We named him Fabio and brought him to Marquette. Yes, we got some strange looks on M-35...

michigan part V: behind the scenes at the zoo
My sister, Becky, is a zookeeper at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek. I got to play "assistant" for an afternoon. The best part was feeding the giraffes Ry-Krisp from the feedloft of the winter barn. How often do you get to look down on a giraffe? Just watch out for those monster tongues. And, for the first time, I managed to catch a Red Panda. We've got them here in Sacramento, but they're so skittish. It took a zookeeper offering food to get this one to stay still so long.

michigan part III: twins
Twin children of a friend, Nathan and Cierra. Or rather, wildly blurry representations of them. Sitting still is just not on the busy toddler's to-do list.

you said fall?
I've been wanting to get a shot of these trees, which are just down the road from my work. Summer appears eternal at that intersection. It was more difficult to get a good picture from the car than I'd thought it would be. They're much more imposing and interesting in real life...

fall in the hills
While still not the traditional multicolored show that I'm used to, the Sierra foothills do provide one autumn neccessity - cider mills! This year, we went to Bolster's Hilltop Ranch (they've been in business since 1951, and it shows in the quality). We picked some apples in the orchard, hiked the nature trails, tasted some wine, and enjoyed some fresh apple crisp a la mode. Our haul: three pounds of a variety of apples for just $1.10, two bottles of honeywine (cherry and blackberry), and of course a half-gallon of cider (in retrospect, should've gotten the gallon, because it was delish). And these pictures...
