though it's not helping my packrat tendencies...
Proof that even the most humble materials can be useful. I received a shipment of new metal do-it-yerself library bookends - I had to attach the included self-adhesive cork bases. I was left with the outline scraps:

Turns out one of the edges was the exact right width for the feet of my plexiglass sewing angle:

My old cheapo halogen desk lamp gave out, so I got a replacement this weekend. It came with two interchangeable "bonus" shades:

I'll never use them for my lamp. I thought briefly of making two pendant lamps based on this design, but quickly realized that I don't need and can't accommodate hanging light fixtures. The small opening is about two inches in diameter, and the large opening about six.
So if you'd like to try your hand at it, I'll send one to you, free. All you have to do is promise to share a picture of the results! I'll be getting another identical lamp (my desk is feeling lopsided, light-wise), so two more of the same shortly. Just give me a holler.
Update: Both current shades are spoken for, but I'm definitely getting that second lamp by the weekend, so those two shades are still up for grabs!

Yes, it's been awhile. Been feeling rather summer-sapped and uninspired. But it's true, I am working on a little sumpin-sumpin, and I've had another site idea slowly coagulating (which may or may not prove technically feasible for my feeble little head, we'll see).
For now, go look at this nifty resin bottlecap project, via Michelle.

I was traveling for business, and during my flight, my pressed powder blush cracked and broke into a bunch of little pieces. I usually throw it away when that happens since I can no longer get even coverage with it, but this time I decided to try an idea I read about a long time ago. I put the pieces into a small bowl and then pulverized them with a spoon. I mixed in some rubbing alcohol until I had a smooth paste (a bit thicker than pancake batter, but thinner than muffin batter). Then I cleaned out an old, mostly-empty, plastic eye shadow container that's been lurking in my makeup drawer for a while now, scooped the paste into it, patted it smooth and let it dry.
After a few days, the alcohol had all dried and the powder looked just as it had when I bought it -- pressed into a nice little cake. It works just great. Now I have to figure out what to do with the compact that the blush came in. I'm thinking of making a purse pomander!
