Geeky gifts (and some projects, too!)

Acorn Studios offers up bits and bobs made from recycled circuit boards, floppies, cds, keyboards, etc. Nifty little stocking stuffers!

And be sure to check out the project page. My favorite for whimsy is the Car Mirror Shelf, and for plain old simplicity and ingenuity, the Cassete Case Business Card Holder.

Who'd have thought?

...that even an old crab trap could find a new, decorative life?

Phoning it in

The new garbagescout.com allows users to take cell photos of discards spotted on the street, and then email it to the site, where it's listed and Googlemapped.

Listings are only in NYC at the moment, but hopefully it'll spread to other urban areas. Another great way to keep stuff out of the landfills!

Locked and Folded

From All-Tribes, a howto on making your own t-shirt folding machine using a box and some tape. Perfect for those of us (AKA me) who hate to fold laundry.

Crate Craft

I adore Clementines! While mine have never been purchased in a crate (always a mesh bag), I'd kind of like one, being a fan of fruit art, and after seeing these ideas (via LJC).

Bowled Over

This has to be the coolest bowl I have ever seen, and not because it is made from strips of magazines. I can only imagine the time it took to make, but the finished object is awesome!

    Doing Hard Time

A how-to on making a clock out of a hard drive.

    From the how-to:

Have an old hard drive that no longer works? As long as it still spins up chances are you could build a clock out of your old hard drive!

You will need some electronic knowledge, some common electronic components and a bit of patience. The clock that is produced isn’t exactly practical since most hard drives (especially older ones) are too loud for a clock that is to operate 24 hours a day.

Care of DIY, a good article on reclaiming yarn from that god-awful sweater that you can't get rid of.

    ReStore

Thanks to Shanee for commenting on Habitat for Humanity ReStores (sorry I missed it during the 'thon!). They sell used and surplus building materials at a fraction of retail, which in turn funds Habitat construction.
